OBJECT SPECIES, 2021
Object species - Lecture Performance. Moderna Museet Film Club. Cur: Catrin Lundqvist. Stockholm. Sweden. 2022
Description:
In the lecture performance Egill Sæbjörnsson stands at a desk and talks, using images and sound that are projected onto a screen besides him
Thoughts behind the work:
Object Species is a lecture performance that aims at shedding light on things, that are considered standing outside any “living” categories, as part of the same system.
In the lecture performance Egill Sæbjörnsson tries to argue that the terms “living” and “dead” are obsolete, and have created a stigma and a paradigm for how we saw the world long time ago, but that might not be applicable any more.
Based on the book STONES according to Egill Sæbjörnsson, the lecture performance takes further the idea of Art as a species that coexists with humans. The argument is to put all things on a similar level, pointing out how all things on the Planet affect each other, regardless of how effective they seem to be from a human point of view. The lecture performance invites us to see the world in a more complex way and hopefully a more realistic way. And it sees art as a species that has helped forming human mankind just as much as human mankind has helped developing art. What we call History of Art, can also be described as the evolutionary story of art in exchange with humans, and how new forms have developed, like subspecies; painting, sculpture, performance, video, drawing, computer based art etc.
