Shelves, 2012
From the solo exhibition Egill Sæbjörnsson at i8 gallery, Reykjavik. Iceland. 2011
Electronics, arduino and solenoids operate inside the works
Description:
What we see are three works in a series called Shelves from the year 2012. This is the first self generative video work Egill Sæbjörnsson produced, using mainly Unity 3D game engine to produce the stream of video image. We see balls fall from the sky and randomly hit
More about the works:
The works is are self generative video works, where the exact replica of the physical boxes is fabricated inside a computer game program. That image is projected onto the boxes together with the balls that move as if they are real. Inside the work is a small computer that drives an arduino board that controls the solenoids that are placed under surfaces of different materials (rock, steel, ceramics) on the three different works. When the solenoids hit the surfaces from below a natural sound is produced, amplified by the boxes below and the wall behind. It looks like the sound is being produced by the balls falling onto the surfaces of the boxes, but that is an illusion. The balls never fall in the same order, but in an endless variation that makes the work resemble more a real natural phenomena.
